We are excited to announce that we are expanding our business from “Proper Pointers” to “The Proper Pointer Co.” As part of that expansion, we are now offering a new service—Proper Behavior: 4-6 Week Basic Obedience Training Program. This program is designed to give your dog a strong foundation in manners, structure, and obedience before they ever come home to you.
Bringing a dog into your life — whether a young puppy, an adolescent, or an adult — is exciting, but it also comes with responsibility. Every dog needs structure, guidance, and consistency to truly thrive in a home environment. From basic manners and leash skills to house expectations and confidence-building, success takes time, patience, and clear communication.
Our program is designed to support families at every stage. Whether you’re starting fresh with a young dog or looking to strengthen foundations with an older one, we focus on building reliable habits, practical obedience, and calm, respectful behavior inside and outside the home.
We don’t believe in quick fixes. We believe in setting dogs — and their families — up for long-term success through structured training, consistent expectations, and real-world application. The goal is simple: a confident dog, a knowledgeable owner, and a smooth, lasting transition into everyday life together.
Over the last decade of raising German Shorthaired Pointers, there is one topic that constantly comes up…obedience. After much consideration, we are finally offering this service to all of our puppy families.
What’s Included in the Program
Over the course of four weeks, your dog will learn, practice, and be introduced to the five core building blocks of obedience:
Sit
Your dog will reliably respond to the “sit” command, teaching them impulse control and patience. This is one of the most practical commands for everyday life, whether greeting new people or waiting politely before meals.
Place/Kennel
Your dog will learn to go to a designated spot (bed, mat, or crate) and remain there calmly until released. This is especially helpful when you need your pup settled during busy household activities or visitors.
Recall (Come When Called)
A reliable recall is one of the most important safety skills. Your well loved member of your family will begin to understand that coming when called is rewarding and expected, creating a strong foundation for future offleash work.
Leash Control
No one enjoys a dog that pulls constantly on the leash. Your dog will practice polite leash manners, walking calmly by your side, and learning to respond to gentle guidance instead of resisting or tugging.
Potty & Crate Training
Perhaps one of the most stressful parts of puppyhood, housebreaking can take weeks if done without consistency. In our program, your dog will be introduced to a structured potty schedule and crate routine—making the adjustment to your home easier and faster.
At pickup, we’ll spend about an hour with you reviewing what your dog has learned and how the training was introduced. This hands-on session will equip you to confidently continue reinforcing the skills at home, helping your dog stay consistent and avoid regression once they transition into your care.
Remember, no matter what your dog learns through this training, or any training, it must be reinforced once your dog goes home. Ongoing training is paramount throughout the life of your dog.

Your puppy will in no wise come home "fully trained" in any of these areas, however, by enrolling your puppy in our 4-6 Week Program, you’ll skip the most difficult part of early training and bring home a puppy that already understands structure, boundaries, and basic commands.
